Hatha Yoga is known as Hatha Vidya. This Yoga has been prevalent since the 15th century in India where it was introduced by a man known as Yogi Swatmarama. Hatha yoga is a way of purifying the body to make it fit for meditation.

It’s sad to say that in such a materialistic world many forget about spiritual maturity or attaining enlightenment, all they want is a slim and fit body. There’s nothing wrong with being healthy and fit but a far greater endeavour is mastery over ourselves. The word Hatha literally means the joining of energies, specifically that of the sun and the moon. Sun coming from the word ‘Ha’ and moon from the word ‘Tha’. So we have ’sun’ and ‘moon’, yin and yang, masculine and feminine, the unifying of two opposites.

All age groups and people can enjoy the benefits of Hatha Yoga. There is a book written for everyone. Most are aimed at pregnant women and helping them get through childbirth but there are also books for young children and the elderly.

Often you will find illustrated Hatha Yoga poses in good books. They will show you with detailed descriptions how, when and where to do each pose. If you join a yoga class it’s easy to forget the lessons learned as time goes by, but if you have a book to remind you of the poses you can always pick it up again where you left off.

We find that Hatha Yoga in particular focuses on the purifying, strengthening and cleansing of the body. In this way the body can draw in finer energies. help you with meditation and connect with higher aspects of yourself. You will see you to do all the exercises, in addition to purifying the internal organs and learning Pranayama, or breathing exercises.

Whether you attend a class or learn from a book you will find that one pose will merge into another. I mean that the initial poses you learn will help you to perform the more complex, more advanced poses. If you are learning from a book make sure it is illustrated or has an accompanying DVD so you can clearly see how to perform the poses.
